UN refers 18-year-old Saudi woman seeking asylum to Australia for refugee resettlement

The United Nations is asking Australia to consider an 18-year-old Saudi woman for refugee resettlement. Rahaf Mohammed al-Qanun was stopped by authorities at a Bangkok airport, as she arrived from Kuwait over the weekend, after running away from her family. She said her family physically and psychologically abused her. Thailand initially said it would deport her at the request of Saudi embassy officials. She refused and live-tweeted her situation from an airport hotel room. This led to a campaign that stirred international support. Qanun is now in the care of the UN’s refugee agency in Bangkok, and Australia hints her request will be accepted.
