France’s grand debate to appease ‘yellow vests’?

French President Emmanuel Macron has set off a three-month national debate during a meeting with about 600 mayors and local officials in Normandy. What he called a “grand debate” will take place through local meetings and on the Internet, focusing on taxes, public services, climate change and democracy. President Macron, whose popularity ratings hit record lows at the end of last year, hopes the process will appease the yellow vest movement.
